A Year To Remember

As performers, we will always remember 2020, and 2021 as the time when events were put on pause, and or pivoted to virtual events.  A time of reflection, and appreciation of the arts in a whole new way.  And a year and a half of taking some time to enjoy other things in life, such as gardens, long walks, and some much needed time off.

Places

Most of us have important places — where we were born or grew up or studied, where we lived at different stages of our lives, where we traveled on a special vacation. And we often use the word “place” to describe someone’s state of mind, too … “She’s in a great place.”

We’ll follow several composers to their special places. Haydn at the pinnacle of a long career taking advantage of the newest technology for the trumpet. The young Mendelssohn visiting Italy during his “grand tour” of Europe. And New England composer Gwyneth Walker taking inspiration from Robert Frost’s poems about Vermont.

San Diego Symphony trumpeter (and bagpiper) John MacFerran Wilds joins us for the Haydn. We’ll see if he’ll share something about his affinity for Scotland.

Program Highlights

California Chamber Orchestra — Dana Zimbric, Conductor

Trumpet Concerto in E-Flat byFranz Josef Haydn (1732 – 1809)
John Wilds, trumpet soloist
Symphony No. 4 in A Major (“Italian”) by Felix Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847)
About Leaves by Gwyneth Walker (b. 1947)
(after poems by Robert Frost)
